Social Context

Socially, the lack of reference points fosters collective resignation and powerlessness. Many expect salvation from a distant messiah, revolutionary, or institution—anyone but themselves.

People often attribute excessive power to the government while overlooking the impact of local relationships and decisions. The microcosm of daily life has far greater influence than distant structures.

Nevertheless, traditional solidarity mechanisms persist. Njangui and tontine systems continue to provide mutual aid and social support, compensating for the failures of formal institutions.
